Leeds North West Labour Events: Food Bank Gigs resume – 1 Sept, and don’t forget the BBQ, 7 Sept

The Autumn season of Leeds NW Labour events starts with the first Food bank gig by LIME SCURVY on Sunday 1st September 7.30-10pm, Upstairs at the Philip Coyne Labour Rooms, Otley.LimeScurvy1

Please come along and bring your friends for a very pleasant evening to round off the weekend and the late summer, and to metaphorically fettle yourself for the autumn…

As always, we have a great selection of bottled ales and lagers, red and white wines by the glass or bottle, tea and, yes, real coffee. All supplied by our brilliant team of completely untrained but highly committed volunteers.

Foodbanks: Hunger, Shopping and Politics in Leeds North West

Whilst shopping at Otley Waitrose on Friday 28th June an Adel and Wharfedale Branch member found that the supermarket was providing floor space for Bradford Foodbank to collect customers’ donated provisions for distribution. After overcoming his initial surprise he experienced mixed emotions. First, he was pleased that he could take the opportunity to make a contribution to such an important charitable cause. His second emotion was of barely controlled anger that foodbanks had become such a necessary and significant part of our lives here and now in wealthy Britain.word_document_144435745_canonical_4d34b48c95

Foodbanks:
The Bradford Foodbank is one of many organised by the Trussell Trust, a Christian charity that serves people whether they have a faith or not.

The Trust recently reported a 170% rise in numbers turning to foodbanks in the last 12 months. The Trust comments:
